Master Programmes

University of Brighton

The ANGELL Business School Freiburg is one of the very few institutions offering full and part-time postgraduate Master degrees in Tourism Management (MA), Hospitality Management (MA), and International Event Management (MA). In cooperation with the renowned University of Brighton (UK) these courses are delivered in Freiburg in a mode that best suits professionals working in the industry. These compact Master degrees run over three semesters with one residential weekend of teaching per month. In a final fourth semester students will write their thesis.
 
The University of Brighton can show decades of experience in career orientated education in the area of service management. In 1999 the University of Brighton was voted 'University of the Year' and has achieved excellent grades from the UK government (QAA). The School of Service Management which designed the courses has furthermore been accredited by the Hotel Catering and International Management Association (HCIMA), Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) and the World Tourism Organization (WTO).

Aims of the master programme

The aims of the programme are to:

  • enable students to develop a depth of knowledge of management theories and specialised aspects of hospitality management.
  • develop students' awareness of the complexity, lacunae and contradictions in the relevant knowledge bases.
  • provide the skills and opportunities for students to critically evaluate and apply concepts to problems and issues in organisations.
  • encourage students to explore their own value and belief systems and share their ideas with colleagues from a variety of backgrounds.
  • encourage students to examine and reflect critically upon their approach to management, their perspective on the industry as a whole and their own sector in particular.
  • develop students' ability to analyse, debate and challenge current theory and to evaluate/argue alternative approaches.
  • develop investigative research skills which will enable students to progress to research degrees or undertake internal and external organisational consultancy.

Learning Outcomes

The outcomes of the programme provide information of how the primary aims are demonstrated in students following this programme:

  1. Depth of understanding of the scope, activities and performance of the functional management areas, with particular reference to service industries.
  2. In-depth understanding of particular aspects of hospitality management.
  3. A forward looking, critical and analytical approach to service management problems and the creation of responses to problems that redefine or expand knowledge.
  4. The ability to evaluate and apply theoretical frameworks and investigative methods to facets of hospitality and tourism management.
  5. The ability to analyse, synthesise and present ideas and concepts from different sources and scenarios, including their own experience.
  6. The ability to make a creative contribution to an area of hospitality and tourism management by means of their dissertation research.
  7. Acquisition of the appropriate academic skills for further study and research in an academic or work based context.
